Red Wings: A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Challenges

The Detroit Red Wings faced another year without a playoff appearance during the 2022-2023 NHL season. While the team showed signs of improvement, their underlying numbers, as captured by the ESBC Power AI metrics, were not as promising as their fans might have hoped. With significant changes in the off-season and a young core that's a year more experienced, Detroit looks to make strides in the 2023-2024 season. But will that be enough?

The Good and The Bad of 2022-2023

Finishing 7th in the Atlantic division was not what Red Wings fans would consider a "win," but it was an improvement over the previous season. The trajectory for this young team appears to be upward, but the ESBC Power AI metrics serve as a reality check. These stats suggest there is still a long road ahead before Detroit can be considered a legitimate playoff contender.

The Off-Season Noise

Detroit was notably active during the off-season. They brought in forwards Alex DeBrincat, Daniel Sprong, and J.T. Compher, who collectively could contribute over 70 goals. On the defensive end, Shayne Gostisbehere, Justin Holl, and Jeff Petry were added to the roster. These acquisitions should boost Detroit's powerplay, although questions about their defensive solidity remain.

Notable Departures

Detroit saw several key players leave. Dominik Kubalik, Pius Suter, and depth players parted ways with the team. Tyler Bertuzzi and Filip Hronek, along with Oskar Sundqvist, were also traded at the deadline last season.

Goalkeeping Concerns

Ville Husso continues as the number one goalie for Detroit, but his form last season was disappointing. The addition of experienced goaltender James Reimer will hopefully provide Husso with the competitive push he needs to perform better.

Coaching Consistency

Kevin Lalonde remains the head coach for Detroit. His continuation is essential for a young team that needs stability as it aims to improve and hopefully contend for the playoffs in the coming seasons.

2023-2024: A Steep Climb Ahead

While Detroit undoubtedly improved its roster in the off-season, they still face significant challenges:

  • Defense: The additions will help the powerplay, but defending their net remains a concern. How this new-look defense gels will be crucial.

  • Goalkeeping: Husso needs to step up his game, and Reimer needs to provide competition.

  • Underlying Metrics: Last season's ESBC Power AI metrics were a reality check. Significant improvement is needed here to match the team's ambition.

  • Young Talent: Players like Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond offer a glimmer of hope. Their development is crucial to the team’s success.

Conclusion

While Detroit improved its point total and overall roster during the off-season, the challenges ahead are steep. The Atlantic division remains competitive, and a playoff spot is far from guaranteed. However, the team is trending upwards, and with smart management and a little bit of luck, Detroit could surprise us all.
