Winnipeg Jets Face Uncertainty After Offseason Moves
The Winnipeg Jets had a strong 2023-2024 regular season, finishing with 110 points, just three points shy of the Central Division champions, the Dallas Stars. The Jets were one of the top teams in the Western Conference, thanks in large part to their excellent defensive structure and standout goaltending. Connor Hellebuyck, who won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender, was the cornerstone of Winnipeg's success. His ability to consistently deliver elite-level goaltending allowed the Jets to stay competitive in tight games, which helped them climb the standings.
Backup goaltender Laurent Brossoit also played a key role in giving Hellebuyck some much-needed rest, and his performance was more than solid. Brossoit posted excellent numbers, providing the Jets with reliable goaltending depth, which is often critical during the long grind of the regular season. Winnipeg's success was not just due to goaltending, though. Throughout the season, the Jets maintained over 50% puck possession, an important indicator of their ability to control the flow of play. Under Bowness, the Jets were a well-structured defensive team that excelled at limiting high-danger scoring chances, and his coaching style was instrumental in helping the Jets stay competitive even when their offense struggled.
Taking over as head coach is Scott Arniel, a former assistant coach with the team. Arniel is an experienced coach, but it remains to be seen how he will manage the Jets and whether he can maintain the strong defensive identity that Bowness instilled. Arniel’s coaching style is expected to be more offense-focused, which could help the Jets in terms of goal-scoring but may also expose them defensively. How well Arniel adapts the team to his system will be one of the key factors in determining Winnipeg’s success this season.
2024-2025 Season Outlook:
With the departures of key players and the uncertainty surrounding a new coaching system, it’s unlikely that the Winnipeg Jets will replicate their 110-point season from 2023-2024. The Central Division remains one of the most competitive in the league, and with other teams improving, Winnipeg could find themselves in a fight just to make the playoffs.
Connor Hellebuyck will once again be the Jets’ most important player. If he can replicate his Vezina-winning form, Winnipeg could still be a difficult team to score against. However, relying solely on elite goaltending to win games is a risky strategy, especially given the potential defensive drop-off after losing Dillon and Schmidt.
On offense, the Jets still have skilled forwards like Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, and Nikolaj Ehlers, who will be expected to carry the load. However, the depth scoring will be crucial, and it remains unclear whether the supporting cast will be able to consistently contribute.
The biggest challenge for Winnipeg will be maintaining the defensive discipline that made them successful under Bowness. If Arniel can find a balance between improving the team’s offensive production without sacrificing too much defensive stability, the Jets could still find themselves in playoff contention. But if the transition to a new system is rocky, there’s a real possibility that Winnipeg could miss the postseason entirely.

The Winnipeg Jets head into the 2024-2025 season with significant changes on and off the ice. While they had a very successful 2023-2024 campaign, finishing with 110 points and strong goaltending from Connor Hellebuyck, the offseason departures and coaching change raise questions about their ability to maintain that level of performance.
