New Coach, Same Pressure: Can Leafs Finally Break Through?

The 2023-2024 season followed a familiar narrative for the Toronto Maple Leafs. With an explosive offense, the team scored 303 goals during the regular season and finished with 102 points, good for a third-place finish in the Atlantic Division. Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and John Tavares powered the Leafs to another strong campaign, showcasing their offensive firepower. Despite their regular-season success, the Leafs once again fell short in the playoffs, exiting early after much anticipation.

This playoff disappointment led to major changes, starting with the firing of head coach Sheldon Keefe. Keefe had overseen regular-season success but struggled to guide the team deep into the playoffs. Enter Craig Berube, who took over as the new head coach. Berube, known for leading the St. Louis Blues to a Stanley Cup in 2019, brings a different approach. However, his tenure with the Blues ended last season after their ESBC Power AI metrics steadily declined post-Cup win. Whether he can revitalize Toronto and help the team overcome its playoff demons remains to be seen.

Offseason Moves:

The Leafs made several notable moves in the offseason, particularly on the defensive side. The acquisition of Chris Tanev, who was a key part of Dallas’ deep playoff run, should provide stability and experience to Toronto’s blue line. Tanev is known for his reliable defensive play, shot-blocking, and leadership, making him a critical addition. Joining him is Jani Hakanpää, a stay-at-home defenseman who excels on the penalty kill.

Another intriguing addition is Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who arrives from the Stanley Cup-winning Florida Panthers. While Ekman-Larsson’s best years may be behind him, his experience and offensive ability from the back end could still provide value, especially in a more sheltered role.

These defensive acquisitions more than compensate for the departures of T.J. Brodie and Ilya Lyubushkin, both of whom left gaps that Tanev, Hakanpää, and Ekman-Larsson can adequately fill. Defensively, the Leafs look stronger heading into the new season.

Up front, the biggest loss was Tyler Bertuzzi, who posted 21 goals and 22 assists last season. Bertuzzi was expendable, given the Leafs' offensive depth with their star forwards, but his grit and energy will be missed. Toronto made no major additions to the forward group, opting to trust their top-end talent to carry the offensive load. Max Pacioretty was signed to a try-out and he might be able to help Leafs on the left wing.

Goaltending Situation:

One of the most critical changes for the Maple Leafs this offseason came in goal. Ilya Samsonov struggled in the 2023-2024 season, finishing with a subpar save percentage below .900, leading to his replacement. Toronto brought in Anthony Stolarz from the Florida Panthers, but the real bet is on Joseph Woll taking over as the No. 1 goaltender. Woll posted strong ESBC Power AI goalie metrics last season, but it’s important to note that his performance came in a limited sample size. The Leafs are banking on Woll’s potential to be a consistent starter, but there’s still some uncertainty around whether he can handle the pressure of a full NHL season.

Goaltending will be a key factor in determining the Leafs' success this season. If Woll can emerge as a reliable starter, Toronto’s defense and offense should have enough firepower to support a deep playoff run. However, if goaltending becomes an issue again, it could spell trouble in critical moments.

2024-2025 Season Outlook:

The biggest challenge for the Leafs this season will be adapting to Craig Berube’s coaching style and seeing how quickly he can implement a more structured defensive system. Toronto has all the pieces to dominate the regular season, with a lethal offensive core of Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, and defenseman Morgan Rielly. However, Berube’s true test will be managing the third and fourth lines, which have been inconsistent in past seasons, and finding a way to balance Toronto’s offense with a more reliable defensive structure.

In St. Louis, Berube found immediate success, guiding the Blues to a Stanley Cup in his first year. However, after that historic win, the team’s performance slowly declined, leading to his eventual dismissal. Berube’s ability to re-energize Toronto and push them beyond their playoff struggles will define his tenure with the Leafs.

Overall, the Maple Leafs have the talent to make another deep playoff run, but they will face immense pressure, especially in a city starved for postseason success. Toronto’s offensive stars will continue to produce, but the real questions lie in how well the team’s new defensive acquisitions mesh and whether Joseph Woll can step up in net.
