Lightning Face Uncertain Season as Stamkos Era Ends
The Tampa Bay Lightning once again demonstrated their resilience in the 2023-2024 season, collecting 98 points and finishing fourth in the Atlantic Division. However, their playoff run was cut short in the first round, where they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers. Although Tampa Bay is no longer the dominant powerhouse they once were due to salary cap constraints, they still managed to field a competitive team and secure a playoff spot.
While the Lightning retained their core talent, the season exposed their limitations. Injuries and a lack of depth began to show, particularly in the postseason, where they couldn’t match the depth of the Panthers. Nevertheless, players like Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov continued to perform at an elite level, while Andrei Vasilevskiy, despite a tough start due to injury, played a crucial role in getting the team to the playoffs.
Offseason Changes:
The 2024 offseason marked a significant turning point for the Lightning, with long-time captain Steven Stamkos departing for the Nashville Predators. Stamkos had been the heart and soul of the team for over a decade, and his departure leaves a leadership void that will be difficult to fill. While Jake Guentzel was brought in to help replace Stamkos' offensive contributions, his ability to take on Stamkos’ leadership role in the locker room remains to be seen.
In addition to Stamkos, Tampa also lost defensemen Mikhail Sergachev and Calvin de Haan. To counter these losses, Tampa Bay made a addition in defense by bringing back Ryan McDonagh, a familiar face who was part of their previous Stanley Cup-winning teams. While McDonagh’s experience and defensive reliability will be a welcome return, it remains uncertain if he can single-handedly stabilize the defense.
Victor Hedman, one of the few remaining pillars of Tampa Bay’s elite core, has now taken over the captaincy. As one of the best defensemen in the league, Hedman will be expected to lead both on and off the ice, but his role has grown even larger with Stamkos' exit.
Key Players and Concerns for 2024-2025:
The Lightning still have some elite talent that keeps them in playoff contention. Brayden Point, who led the team in scoring last season, will once again be a key offensive driver. Nikita Kucherov remains one of the league’s most dangerous forwards, while Victor Hedman’s impact on defense cannot be overstated.
However, the depth of the team is a concern. The salary cap has forced Tampa Bay into difficult roster decisions, and the depth that was once their hallmark is no longer the same. The Lightning will rely heavily on their stars, but they will need consistent contributions from their bottom-six forwards and third-pairing defensemen if they hope to stay competitive.
Coach Jon Cooper has done well in Tampa for several seasons, but now his starting hand is maybe weaker than ever.
A major storyline to watch this season is Andrei Vasilevskiy’s performance in goal. Vasilevskiy started the 2023-2024 season injured and struggled to regain his usual dominant form, posting career-low ESBC Power AI goalie metrics. If Vasilevskiy can rebound to his elite level, Tampa Bay will have a strong foundation to build upon. However, if his struggles continue, it could spell trouble for the Lightning, as their margin for error is much smaller without their once-deep roster.
2024-2025 Season Outlook:
With significant changes to the roster and leadership, the 2024-2025 season will be one of transition for Tampa Bay. While the Lightning still have elite talent at key positions, the departure of Steven Stamkos and the loss of Mikhail Sergachev raises questions about the team’s depth and overall ability to compete in a highly competitive Atlantic Division.
Jake Guentzel will be expected to help fill the offensive void left by Stamkos, and his shooting ability will be crucial for Tampa’s top-six forward group. However, Guentzel’s ability to step into a leadership role and bring the same level of consistency as Stamkos remains to be seen.
The success of the upcoming season will largely depend on the health and performance of Vasilevskiy. If he can return to his Vezina-caliber form, the Lightning could punch their ticket to the playoffs once again. If not, they may find themselves struggling to stay in the postseason race.
According to ESBC Power AI analysis, the Lightning are projected to be a playoff bubble team in 2024-2025. While they have the potential to surprise, much will depend on how well they adjust to life without Stamkos and how quickly their new acquisitions, such as Guentzel, Atkinson, Ylönen and Girgesons can integrate into the lineup. With the Atlantic Division featuring powerhouses like Florida and Toronto plus the rise of some Metropolitan teams, the road to the playoffs will be tougher than ever for Tampa Bay.
