Islanders Face Playoff Bubble Battle in 2024-25 Season
The 2023-2024 season was a rollercoaster for the New York Islanders, but they managed to make the playoffs under the guidance of Patrick Roy, who took over as head coach midseason. Despite some ups and downs, the Islanders finished with 94 points, which accurately reflected their performance based on their ESBC Power AI metrics. The team ranked in the middle of the pack, showcasing a solid but unspectacular regular season.
In the playoffs, the Islanders faced the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round, but their run was short-lived as they were eliminated in six games. While the team displayed resilience under Roy, their lack of offensive firepower and inconsistencies in certain areas limited their potential for a deeper playoff push.
Offseason Moves:
The Islanders had a relatively quiet offseason, with only a few notable changes to their roster. Defenseman Sebastian Aho, who played a marginal role on the blue line, departed, while skilled winger Anthony Duclair was brought in to inject some speed and offensive flair into the forward group. Duclair’s ability to contribute offensively could provide a spark for a team that often struggles to generate consistent scoring.
However, the biggest question mark for the Islanders revolves around their goaltending situation. Ilya Sorokin, the team’s star netminder and one of the league’s top goalies, underwent back surgery during the summer. While he has not been officially ruled out for the season opener, there are concerns about his ability to return to his elite form. If Sorokin is unable to play at his usual high level, backup goaltender Semyon Varlamov will be forced to carry a heavier load. While Varlamov is a capable veteran, relying on him for extended periods may expose the Islanders to defensive vulnerabilities.
Key Players and Areas to Watch:
The Islanders' strength continues to lie in their defensive structure and goaltending. Sorokin, when healthy, provides a solid backbone, while Varlamov remains a reliable option. Defensively, the team is built to play a tight, structured game, which has been a staple of their success in recent years.
Offensively, the addition of Anthony Duclair gives the team some added speed and skill. Duclair, known for his quickness and ability to finish plays, could provide the Islanders with the secondary scoring they desperately need. However, the Islanders' core group, including Mathew Barzal, Anders Lee, and Brock Nelson, will once again be relied upon to drive the offense.
One of the Islanders’ main challenges is their ability to generate consistent offense, which has been a weakness in recent seasons. The team’s defensive style often limits their ability to score in high volumes, making it critical for their top players to produce. If Duclair can provide a spark and if the team stays healthy, they should be able to remain competitive in most games.
2024-2025 Season Outlook:
Heading into the 2024-2025 season, the Islanders are once again expected to be in the playoff bubble. With only minor changes to the roster, they are likely to hover around the 90-point mark, similar to last season. The biggest factor in determining their success will be the health and performance of Ilya Sorokin. If Sorokin can return to elite form after his surgery, the Islanders will have the goaltending necessary to stay competitive. If not, they may find themselves struggling to keep pace in a highly competitive Metropolitan Division.
The addition of Anthony Duclair provides some hope for offensive improvement, but it remains to be seen how well he will fit into the Islanders’ defensive-minded system. Head coach Patrick Roy will need to find the right balance between maintaining the team’s defensive structure and allowing Duclair and other offensive players to thrive.
Overall, the Islanders’ potential for success in the 2024-2025 season hinges on their ability to stay healthy and find consistent offensive production. While they are not expected to be among the league’s elite, they have the tools to compete for a playoff spot if everything breaks their way.
