Hurricanes Set for Another Strong Season, But Questions Loom
The Carolina Hurricanes continued their strong regular-season performances under head coach Rod Brind’Amour in 2023-2024, finishing with 111 points and securing second place in the Metropolitan Division behind the New York Rangers. The Hurricanes were once again a dominant puck-possession team, controlling the flow of games and ranking among the best in ESBC Power AI metrics all season. They played a high-pressure, fast-paced style, which allowed them to dominate opponents in most matchups.
Despite a stellar regular season, the Hurricanes fell short in the playoffs, a story that has become all too familiar in recent years. After easily dispatching the New York Islanders in the first round, Carolina ran into the Rangers in the second round, where they were eliminated. The early playoff exit left fans frustrated as the team failed to translate their regular-season success into postseason glory once again.
Offseason Changes:
The Hurricanes entered the 2024 offseason with several key departures that will shape the upcoming season. Defensemen Brady Skjei and Brett Pesce, who formed the second defensive pairing, are gone, creating a significant void on the blue line. Additionally, reliable forward Teuvo Teräväinen, known for his two-way play and offensive contributions, has also departed.
To offset these losses, Carolina made several acquisitions. The most notable additions include defensemen Sean Walker and Shayne Gostisbehere, forward Jack Roslovic, and rugged winger Will Carrier. Gostisbehere, known for his offensive skills from the back end, should help replace some of the production lost with Skjei and Pesce. Sean Walker brings a more defensive presence, while Roslovic and Carrier add depth to the forward group.
One of the strengths of Brind’Amour’s system is the team’s ability to integrate new players quickly and effectively. The Hurricanes have a proven track record of getting the most out of their acquisitions, and while there is some uncertainty about how these new additions will perform, the outlook is positive based on past experience.
Key Areas of Concern:
While the Hurricanes remain one of the top teams in the NHL, they face some lingering questions heading into the 2024-2025 season. The most notable issue is the uncertainty surrounding the second-line center position. Jordan Staal, the team’s captain, excels as a shutdown third-line center, but Carolina still lacks a true second-line pivot. Jesperi Kotkaniemi has been given plenty of opportunities to fill that role, but he has yet to solidify his position as a reliable top-six center.
This gap could be a limiting factor for the Hurricanes if they don’t find a solution, as top-tier teams often rely on strength down the middle to drive playoff success. If Kotkaniemi cannot elevate his game, the Hurricanes may need to seek external solutions to remain competitive in the postseason.
Goaltending Outlook:
The goaltending tandem of Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov returns for the 2024-2025 season. While not considered an elite duo, Andersen and Kochetkov are dependable enough to give the Hurricanes a chance to win most nights. Andersen’s experience combined with Kochetkov’s potential as a rising star creates a solid, if unspectacular, goaltending foundation.
Carolina’s strong defensive structure often minimizes high-danger chances, which means the Hurricanes don’t need elite goaltending to be successful. However, if they are to make a deeper playoff run, both Andersen and Kochetkov will need to step up in crucial moments.
2024-2025 Season Outlook:
Once again, the Hurricanes are expected to be among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. With Rod Brind’Amour at the helm and a system that consistently produces results, Carolina is projected to break the 100-point barrier for another season. Their puck-possession dominance and defensive reliability should keep them competitive in the regular season, but the question remains whether they can finally translate that success into a deeper playoff run.
The departures of Skjei, Pesce, and Teräväinen create some uncertainty, but the team’s ability to adapt to new personnel under Brind’Amour’s leadership should mitigate those losses. The real challenge for Carolina will be addressing their weakness at second-line center and ensuring that their goaltending is strong enough for the playoffs.
According to ESBC Power AI predictions, the Hurricanes will once again be a top contender, but with a few more uncertainties than in previous seasons. The team is built to win in the regular season, but playoff success will depend on solving key issues in their lineup.
