Boston Bruins at a Crossroads: Goaltending the Key
The Boston Bruins entered the 2023-2024 season with uncertainty after the retirement of long-time captain and defensive stalwart Patrice Bergeron. Many feared a significant decline, but the Bruins defied those expectations, collecting a solid 109 points and finishing second in the Atlantic Division, just one point shy of the division-leading Florida Panthers. The Bruins leaned on their strengths, particularly their team defense and a dependable goaltending tandem of Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman, to remain one of the league's top teams.
In the playoffs, Boston extended their dominance over the Toronto Maple Leafs, eliminating them in a tightly contested seven-game series. However, the second round ended in familiar disappointment as the Florida Panthers once again proved to be their kryptonite, sending the Bruins packing.
David Pastrnak led the way offensively, scoring 110 points, while Brad Marchand embraced his new role as captain, continuing to provide leadership and clutch performances. Overall, the Bruins’ ESBC Power AI metrics reflected a solid, though not spectacular, season. They performed about as expected, with no dramatic under- or overachievement in their regular-season results.
Offseason Changes and Concerns:
While the Bruins were successful in maintaining a high level of performance last season, cracks began to show in certain areas that raise concerns for 2024-2025. One of the key issues is that the Bruins posted above-average shooting and save percentages last season—two stats that are vulnerable to regression. While there is certainly skill involved in both categories, it’s fair to expect these metrics to return closer to league averages, which could impact the Bruins' ability to replicate their success.
A major loss for the Bruins was the trade of Linus Ullmark. The goaltender was part of Boston’s elite tandem last season, and moving him for salary cap reasons leaves a significant hole in net. Ullmark’s replacement, Joonas Korpisalo, is a notable downgrade, which puts added pressure on Jeremy Swayman—assuming he signs a contract before the season starts. If Swayman remains unsigned, the Bruins' goalie tandem could end up being Korpisalo and Brandon Bussi, a significant step down from last season's elite pairing of Swayman-Ullmark.
Other key departures include Jake DeBrusk, Matt Grzelcyk, and Derek Forbort, who all contributed to the team's depth. DeBrusk’s offensive output will be missed, while Grzelcyk and Forbort’s steady defensive play leaves gaps on the blue line.
To bolster their lineup, the Bruins made two significant additions. The most notable is Elias Lindholm, who brings much-needed depth to their center position. Lindholm’s ability to contribute offensively and play a responsible two-way game should help fill the void left by Bergeron’s retirement. On defense, the Bruins acquired Nikita Zadorov from Vancouver, a big-bodied defenseman who is likely to slot into the second or third pairing and provide physicality.
Head coach Jim Montgomery remains in charge, and he’s done a commendable job keeping the Bruins competitive despite some of the challenges the team has faced. However, the outlook for the upcoming season largely depends on whether Swayman signs a contract and stabilizes the goaltending situation.
2024-2025 Season Outlook:
Looking ahead to the 2024-2025 season, the Bruins are at a crossroads. Their core of elite talent—David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Charlie McAvoy—remains intact, and the addition of Elias Lindholm strengthens their center depth. However, the loss of Linus Ullmark and the potential regression in key metrics raise significant concerns.
If Jeremy Swayman signs and returns to form, the Bruins could maintain their defensive strength and once again be a playoff contender. However, if the goaltending tandem turns out to be Korpisalo and Bussi, the Bruins are likely to take a significant step back. With goaltending being one of the most critical areas in today’s NHL, this downgrade could push Boston from being a top team to a playoff bubble team.
Without the elite goaltending that carried them last season, ESBC Power AI analysis projects the Bruins to finish with around 90 points. This would place them in danger of missing the playoffs, with more than a 50% chance of finishing outside the top eight in the Eastern Conference.
Conclusion:
The Boston Bruins face an uncertain 2024-2025 season. While they still possess some of the league’s top talent, especially offensively, their success will hinge on stabilizing their goaltending and avoiding regression in shooting and save percentages. The additions of Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov should help address some of the team’s concerns, but without a strong presence in net, the Bruins are far from guaranteed a return to the playoffs. Head coach Jim Montgomery will need to maximize the team’s potential, but the margin for error is slim in a competitive Atlantic Division.
